We review recent developments in the study of optical forces in integrated photonics. Our initial predictions suggested that freely suspended, parallel silicon waveguides should exhibit significant forces due to mode coupling. Symmetric and anti-symmetric modes give rise to attractive and repulsive modes respectively, analogous to bonding and anti-bonding orbitals in solid state physics. Experimental demonstrations of forces in waveguide and microresonator systems rapidly followed. We review recent work on applications of optical forces to on-chip manipulation of light signals. 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Cavity-less on-chip optomechanics using excitonic transitions in semiconductor heterostructures
The hybridization of semiconductor optoelectronic devices and nanomechanical resonators provides a new class of optomechanical systems in which mechanical motion can be coupled to light without any optical cavities. Such cavity-less optomechanical systems interconnect photons, phonons and electrons (holes) in a highly integrable platform, opening up the development of functional integrated nano...
متن کاملHigh-mechanical-frequency characteristics of optomechanical crystal cavity with coupling waveguide
Optomechanical crystals have attracted great attention recently for their ability to realize strong photon-phonon interaction in cavity optomechanical systems. By far, the operation of cavity optomechanical systems with high mechanical frequency has to employ tapered fibres or one-sided waveguides with circulators to couple the light into and out of the cavities, which hinders their on-chip app...
متن کاملOptomechanical measurement of photon spin angular momentum and optical torque in integrated photonic devices
Photons carry linear momentum and spin angular momentum when circularly or elliptically polarized. During light-matter interaction, transfer of linear momentum leads to optical forces, whereas transfer of angular momentum induces optical torque. Optical forces including radiation pressure and gradient forces have long been used in optical tweezers and laser cooling. In nanophotonic devices, opt...
متن کاملReliability and Performance Evaluation of Fault-aware Routing Methods for Network-on-Chip Architectures (RESEARCH NOTE)
Nowadays, faults and failures are increasing especially in complex systems such as Network-on-Chip (NoC) based Systems-on-a-Chip due to the increasing susceptibility and decreasing feature sizes. On the other hand, fault-tolerant routing algorithms have an evident effect on tolerating permanent faults and improving the reliability of a Network-on-Chip based system. This paper presents reliabili...
متن کاملLight-Driven Droplet Manipulation Technologies for Lab-on-a-Chip Applications
Droplet-based (digital) microfluidics has been demonstrated in many lab-on-a-chip applications due to its free crosscontamination and no dispersion nature. Droplet manipulation mechanisms are versatile, and each has unique advantages and limitations. Recently, the idea of manipulating droplets with light beams either through optical forces or light-induced physical mechanisms has attracted some...
